Compare and constrast

Beowulf is an epic hero whose story was passed down orally for many years. Since the author is unknown, some people would add their own twist to it. The book Beowulf has many differences from the movie. There were three main differences that I really noticed. The main ones were when Beowulf's deal with Grendel's mom, Hrothgar's decision to make Beowulf king if the Danes and Grendel's approach to Heorot.

In the movie, Beowulf made a deal with Grendel's mother. Grendel's mom was a swamp like fiend in both of the stories. In the book Beowulf slaughtered her, However in the film, he made a deal with Grendel's mother for immortality and the chance to be king. She also stated that his name will live on forever and he would be unbeatable. Back then the Angles-Saxons believed in those kinds of things. Angles-Saxons wanted their name live on even after they had died. Due to his Tragic flaw, Beowulf took the deal.

Beowulf became King of the Danes, unlike the book where he was King of Geatland. In the text Beowulf was king of Geatland for fifty years. His pride was so high that he didn't believe in losing. Hrothgar was always King of the Danes in the book. However in the movie, Hrothgar crowned Beowulf king and then killed himself. Through it all Beowulf had a King like figure with both the text and film.

In the beginning of the movie Grendels ear couldn't take a lot of noise. Grendel had a sensitive ear, however in the text there was no mention of his ears. Grendel only came to Heorot in the film because the music was too loud. The similarities between the two reasons is that Grendel still ate, destroyed, and injured a lot of people.

Beowulf will always have the same perspective. The story was passed down orally, so some people might add their own flavor. In my opinion the movie and the book were both great. It was very interesting to me because I got to see how different people portray the same event. Everyone have their own unique way of thinking. It gives us a chance to come up with something new or more interesting.
